Carcinoid Tumors
Understanding this condition
Carcinoid tumors are small, malignant or benign tumors that are most commonly found in the gastrointestinal tract. Carcinoid syndrome may occur in some patients who have carcinoid tumors. The carcinoid syndrome occurs when carcinoid tumors overproduce substances such as serotonin that normally occur in your body. The overproduction of serotonin and other hormones can cause symptoms such as flushing (turning red and feeling warm) and diarrhea.
