COPD Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Understanding this condition
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a lung disease that gets worse over time. It becomes harder for a person with COPD to get air in and out of the lungs. COPD usually refers to emphysema (em-fa-SEE-ma) or chronic bronchitis (bron-KI-tis). In emphysema, damage to tiny air sacs in the lungs keeps air from coming in and going out. In chronic bronchitis, small airways in the lungs become red and swollen.
