Leprosy
Understanding this condition
Leprosy (LEP-ruh-see) can be mild or severe. Severe leprosy can spread from person to person. The bacteria are also found in soil, bugs, or animals. It damages the nerves outside the spine and brain. It also damages the skin, lining of the nose, eyes, and genitals.
Healthy people with strong immune systems usually don't get leprosy. It occurs mainly in Latin America, Asia, Africa, and the Pacific Islands.
