Schizophrenia (SKIZ-o-FRE-nee-uh) is a serious mental disease. It can come on suddenly, or slowly over the years and has many different symptoms. Mainly, it makes people lose touch with reality. Their thinking becomes disturbed. They may behave strangely. They often see things and hear voices that aren't really there.
